Sport on the Box

“Don’t count the day, make the day count…

Muhammad Ali

So I have a confession to make. I hope I am not alone. Until recently, I was under the impression that Boxing Day was named as part of a tradition of sport, specfically Boxing events, held on the day after Christmas. This is incorrect. In my defence, the history of sport on Boxing Day is strong. In Australia it is dominated by Test cricket and Ocean Racing. Test cricket is also played in New Zealand and South Africa. Horse racing is popular in Europe and Barbados. It is the biggest day for equestrian hunts. Soccer often uses the day to schedule traditional rival grudge fixtures. In Sweden it is the start of bandy season. To ease my embarrassment, Ghana, Malawi, Zambia, Tanzania and Italy hold large-scale professional boxing tournaments. #sportwithahangover #letsmakelemonade
