The devil is in the detail

“Music is liquid architecture. Architecture is frozen music…”

Goethe

This family home is in Zealand, Denmark is remarkable. It is an open plan design and was the embryo for all future Scandinavian house style. This is Jorn Utzon’s home, designed by him in 1952. Here Utzon prepared his designs for the Sydney Opera House competition. When Utzon won the Opera House commission in 1959, this house was the only one of his designs to ever be built. He had won seven prestigious international architectural competitions, but those buildings had never gone ahead to construction. Utzon’s reputation and income was based on invovative concepts and prize money. His plans were never practical and never tested. The trouble was that Sydney actually wanted an Opera House. Utzon’s time in Sydney was controversial, but most issues stemmed from the limited constructional detail in his drawings and a lack of experience designing internal spaces for music performance. #mywifewouldlovethishouse #letsmakelemonade
