Worth the detour

“I love the gallery, the arena of representation…’

Jeff Koons

London is full of great galleries. The National Gallery, The Portrait gallery, the V&A, the Tate Modern, just for starters. I want to focus on a much smaller space, but definitely my favourite. The Courthald Gallery has a modest entrance off the imposing courtyard of Somerset House, next to the Strand. It has a tightly curated and beautifully displayed collection, with a focus on Impressionism and Post-Impressionism. It has Manets, Monets, Van Goghs and Rubens, many of which are icons of modern postcards and posters. The joy of a visit is the spacing, intimacy and simple presentation of these works. The art seems to be uncluttered and accessible. The 18th century architecture of the building, particularly corridors and stairwells have been preserved, yet restored with a modern flair. It feels like a family home. The predominant accent colour of the interiors is blue, which of course pleased me no end. #homeoffakeorfortune
