“In the beginning…empty darkness was over the surface and the deep…”

I am a sucker for Colour field painting. I am drawn to artists such as Rothko, Motherwell, Mondrian and Miro. If you do your research, this style is said to have emerged in NYC during the 1940s and 50s. This may not be entirely true. Let me introduce you to Robertus de Fluctibus, better known as Robert Fludd. He was a 16th century English Paracelsian physician with extensive interests in science and the occult. Both were essentially the same at that time. In his magnum opus book, The History of Macrocosm and Microcosm, he set out to chronicle the entire history of man and the universe. Fludd was keen to start the book with an illustration of heaven and earth, the universe. What do you put such an image, or more accurately what do you leave out? Fludd decided to leave out everything, including the light. In doing so he created the first Colour field artwork. #thentherewaslight #letsmakelemonade
