On November 8th 1291 a law passed that confined glass making in Venice to a cluster of islands in the lagoon referred to as Murano. The industry used furnaces that were a fire hazard on the densely inhabited Venetian mainland. To ensure compliance and perhaps to protect commercial secrecy, glassblowers were confined to Murano on pain of death. Not so the rich. Murano in the 1200s was a summer resort for the nobles and aristocrats of Venice. The high society influencers of Venice collected the glass they found in Murano as symbols of their upmarket lifestyle. The glass became highly valued and sought after by would be social climbers.
