“Theodor Billroth Operating”
Adalbert Franz Aigelmann, 1890
Many artists have ventured into the operating room, but few have produced their most famous piece of work there. Adalbert Seligmann was a Viennese painter and art critic. His access to the medical community came through his father, who was a noted medical historian. Seilgmann was famous for establishing the first female art school in Europe and for being the owner of Beethoven’s skull. He was an opponent of plein air painting and impressionist art. Theodore Billroth is generally considered the father of modern abdominal surgery, particularly the art of gastrectomy. He was also a bit of a polymath. An accomplished musician, he was a close friend of Johannes Brahms. Billroth pioneered the scientific analysis of musicality. I feel in 2024 both Seligmann and Billroth would have had blogs. #penpaintscalpelmusicskull #letsmakelemonade
