“I began as a naturalistic painter, but I never stopped progressing…”
Piet Mondrian
I have always been a Mondrian tragic. His is an instantly recognisable style, seen almost daily in art, textiles, architecture and homewares. Mondian was heavily influenced by his involvement in the Dutch De Stijl movement, which advocated for purity and simplicity in design. The use of primary colours represented the fundamental aspects of reality, employing the primary pigments of colour. Red symbolised the physical, blue the spiritual and yellow the emotional. The grids in his paintings repeated the structure of reality and order in a chaotic world. Grids became integral to his art after Mondrian moved to America. The streets, avenues and buildings of New York becoming inspirational to the composition of his most iconic works. I love painting in the style of Mondrian and employing his techniques, masking tape and all. Somehow I was more drawn to the colours and tones of my beloved Silver Sands Washpool. #redyellowbluewhitegreyblack #letsmakelemonade
