Fool’s gold

“Gold makes the ugly beautiful…”

Moliere

Mineral pyrite or iron pyrite is also known as fool’s gold. Pyrite’s metallic lustre and pale brass-yellow appearance gives it a superficial resemblance to gold. Compared to gold, pyrite is abundant, crystalloid, brittle, hard, non ductile, and cheap. Whilst gold is revered almost all cultures and civilizations, pyrite is sacred only in the remote south of Thailand. The much awaited 2026 Pelikan Edelstein fountain pen ink of the year is Pyrite. It is a showstopper supersaturated shimmer ink. On paper it looks a real stunner, in the pen it is proving a real nightmare. The shimmer particles are clogging fountain pen feeds almost instantly, and in some cases permanently. The fountain pen community is up in arms again. How could an established and respected fountain pen company be so careless as to release this intrinsically flawed ink with such fanfare and no hint of warning! Heads will roll! #allthatglitters #letsmakelemonade
