“Since 1986 they’re has been a little piece of Chernobyl in all os us…”
Mika Karu
This weekend is the 40th anniversary of the Chernobyl nuclear accident. The explosion of the retractor lead to the largest ever isolation and containment response ever undertaken. However, not everyone was isolated and not everything was contained. Massive clouds of radioactive isotopes were released into skies above Belarus, Ukraine and Russia. One of the lasting effects has been from exposure to radioactive iodine. This contaminated the milk supplies, was consumed by infants and children, and ultimately was taken up into their thyroid glands. Since 1986 19,000 young adults have diagnosed with papillary thyroid cancer, way above the pre Chernobyl baseline rate. Fortunately, over 98% appear to have survived their malignancy, but all have needed to have a thyroidectomy and join the Chernobyl necklace club. #ihavegotonetoo #letsmakelemonade
