Even I have to admit that there are times when a fountain pen is not the best option. At those awkward moments, you could do a lot worse than reaching for one of these pens. The UNIBALL Zento gel pen was released in late 2025. The Zento is marketed on the basis of its new, feature packed and game changing ink. Despite the appealing range of pen colour ways, I need to warn you that they all contain black ink. But what an ink, it delivers smoother more cushioned gliding of the pen over the paper, specifically designed to be reminiscent of a fountain pen. The ink also has almost instantaneous drying, which prevents the scourge of the gel pen, feathering, smudging, and bleed through. Many in the stationery community have remarked on the matte appearance, contrasting to the usual gloss of gel inks. Some complain that the Zento ink leans towards charcoal rather than pure black, but others see this as a feature, not a shortcoming.
