John Hanning Speke was a commissioned officer in the army of the East India Company. In July 1860 he was ordered on his third expedition into Northern Africa to locate the source of the River Nile, and perhaps a commercially important inland sea. Two years later on July 21st 1862, when he reached Ripon Falls on Lake Victoria, he firmly believed he had traced the Nile back to its source. Whether he was correct or not is still disputed, but the quest had taken the better part of a decade and much of Speke’s health and sanity. Well Melissa and I live on a river, the mighty Torrens. I too felt the need to explore its source for myself. My quest was to ride my e-bike as far as possible along the Linear Park, up into the Adelaide Hills, to the source of the Torrens. Luckily for me it only took just over an hour, covering a distance of 16km. It was still not without hazards, but I did return with my health and most of my sanity. #heroexplorers #letsmakelemonade
