Gilding the Lamy

“Real guilloche should be microscopically imperfect, akin to the brush marks of a fine painting…”

Louis Erard Metiers

So double trouble has engulfed the fountain pen community. The LAMY Safari has arguably been one of the most successful fountain pens. If you only have one fountain pen, it could well be a Safari. These pens are absolutely everywhere, pen shops, large chain stationery stores, homeware and design outlets, even airports. The Safari has few standard colours, red, white yellow, blue, black etc. You get the idea. Each year they also produce a couple of limited edition colour ways, which are anxiously awaited. Above we can see the 2026 offerings, the black Meteorite, and the purple Meteora. The first issue is that never before has LAMY have a textured Safari barrel. The second is that they have described this as guilloche, a decorative, repetitive design engraved on objects of artistic merit. Pedants are insisting that guilloche can only refer to designs on metal. I personally don’t care about either of these contentious issues, I hate the names. #chaosensues #letsmakelemonade
