“A sister is both your mirror and your opposite…”
Elizabeth Fischel
In 1971 the New Zealand High Commissioner was hosted for lunch by the Lord Major of Adelaide. Somewhere over the meal and probably after a few wines, an idea was hatched. Why not make Adelaide and Christchurch, reasonably comparable cities in many ways, sisters. Both are smallish cities in their nations, both are based on small meandering rivers, both have a central Victoria Square with an iconic fountain, both were designed by William Light. Thus in 1972, Christchurch was proclaimed the first Sister City of Adelaide. The concept caught on quickly, as George Town, Malaysia in 1973, Himeji, Japan in 1982, Austin, USA in 1983 and Qindaq, China in 2013, all subsequently became Adelaide’s siblings. Christchurch is an important city for Melissa and I. It was the site of our first overseas trip together, where I passed my Surgical Fellowship exam and likely where our first daughter was conceived. #Greattobeback #letsmakelemonade
