Pen, notebook and paper

“Insights don’t usually arrive at my desk, but go into notebooks when I’m on the move…”

Hilary Mantel

So we talked about the Hemingway’s pencils. What about his notebooks? Moleskine marketing campaigns would have you believe that he would have used one of theirs. The only issue is that Moleskine was founded in Milan during 1997. Hemingway took his own life in 1961. I like to Urban sketch in my Moleskine. Alas, their paper is too prone to feathering ink for the routine use of fountain pens. My journal is a convenient and portable A5 size. The most common paper sizing system, ISO216, starts with the standard printers stock paper of 841 x 1189 mm (A0). Cut it in half and it is A1, again A2, again A3. Just continue until reaching the most practical notebook sizes of A4 and A5, and for pocket books A6. Paper thickness is described in pounds or grams, but beware it is not standardised between paper types and manufacturers. #goodpaperisathingofbeauty #letsmakelemonade
