“If you skew the endocrine system, you lose the pathway to self…”

Hilary Mantel

If you visit my office at TQEH Department of Surgery, you will encounter one of my favourite pieces of art. This is an original teaching poster from the German Hygiene Museum. The images of the human endocrine organs are unadorned, powerful and verge on abstraction. It is a really cool educational tool. The German Hygiene Museum was founded in 1912 as a public venue for health education. For a time during the Third Reich it came under darker influences, providing propaganda relating to racial ideology and eugenics. This poster dates from the 1950s, when the museum was an influential East German institution. How it came to be in an Adelaide antique shop is hard to imagine. #endocrinesurgeon #letsmakelemonade
