“Opening the book, I inhaled. The smell of old books, so sharp, so dry you can taste it…”
Dianne Setterfield
One of my favourite places to poke about is the book shop on Frome Road. Stuff is everywhere, and everything is worth at least a passing look. Old books are not the same as pieces of art. There is is only one Mona Lisa, it is futile to search for more. Not so with books. Most rare books have an unknown number of surviving copies, they might still be found by the right hunter. ASW Rosenbach was known as the Napoleon of books, he is regarded as the greatest book finder in the world. He was born in New York in 1876, and during his life unearthed books that were resold for over $75 million dollars. His finds included 8 Gutenberg Bibles and 30 Shakespearian first editions. He was a rock star of rare books. Currently, the holy grail to search for is a first edition of The Great Gatsby with a mint condition dust jacket. #lockdownhobby #booksellersmovie #letsmakelemonade
