Members of the red list

“It’s not what you look at that matters it’s what you see…”

Henry David Thoreau

Last weekend was perfect weather for a beach walk at Aldinga. Not all the beach was available, as there were some special guests. On the high ground was a reserved area containing a breeding pair of Hooded Plovers. The presence of these guys is important. These birds are on the International Union for Conservation of Nature Red list. The Red list categories are least concern, near threatened, vulnerable, endangered, critically endangered, extinct in the wild, and extinct. These Plovers are native to South Australia and Tasmania. Due to their exposed nesting habits on the back of populated beaches they are exceptionally vulnerable to human activities and the dogs that accompany us. #rarebirdsindeed #letsmakelemonade
