“The most important man ever born in Australia…”
Sir Robert Menzies
For 21 years the Baron of Adelaide and Marsten was depicted on our $50 bill. Howard Florey was born in Adelaide, educated at PAC and studied Medicine at Adelaide University. A Rhodes scholarship took him to Oxford and Cambridge. He was the first Australian to be President of the Royal Society. He was a founder and Chancellor of the ANU. Whilst Fleming discovered penicillin, it was was Florey that had the vision to develop it into a drug, saving and influencing the lives of millions. The recent ABC Science Show is devoted to Florey’s life. It is amazing to hear recordings his own voice describe his work and adventures. He is a unique Australian. The show is available is a podcast and thoroughly recommended. #adelaidemedsschoolgraduates #letsmakelemonade
