The people’s place

“Of the people, by the people, for the people…”

Sun Yat-Sen

Recently this remarkable image appeared on the Sturt Supporters FB page. It is from the SA Government photo archive. Taken on the 18th September 1918, it records the visit of a British tank to Unley Oval as part of a fund raising campaign. Our local ovals have always been more than sporting venues. Football and cricket require these large spaces, but they don’t define their importance to us. These places are for parades, fairs, rallies and concerts. Rolling Stones or Adele anyone? During World Wars they are barracks, training depots and air raid shelters. In bushfires they are refuges of last resort. In pandemics they are physical and mental health sanctuaries. #supportlocalovals #letsmakelemonade
