Not all masks are the same

“There comes a time when good men must wear a mask…”

Johnny Depp

Over the past year we have all been wearing a lot of masks, but they have always been popular, sometimes for very different reasons. Venetian carnival has always been linked to masks. Wearing masks in 17th Century Venice was a status symbol, but subject to strict rules. Masks could not be worn outside of carnival time, or in sacred spaces, men could not dress as women, and prostitutes could not wear masks at all. Venetian masks have evolved into several themes or characters – bauta, moretta, gnaga, medico della peste, pantalone, arlecchino and colombina. My favourite is the medico della peste – the Plague Doctor. Tonight however, my wife and I will be wearing marching masks in the most popular colombina style. Nice to wear a mask for fun. #surgeonsball #letsmakelemonade
