‘The Atlas Mountains from Marrakesh”
Winston Churchill
My longtime friend Mike Shearwood is a keen reader of this blog. Recently he sent me news of the upcoming sale of the above painting. Winston Churchill we have discussed before, indeed this is the third blog post regarding him. During his lifetime, Churchill never sold his paintings, but he gave them away as gifts to key friends. In 1946 on a Havanan beach, the ex PM had a chance meeting with an Oxford educated Cuban Beer Baron. Antonio Giraundier shared his love of art, poetry, wine and cigars. As a result of this this meeting and subsequent friendship, Giraundier sent Churchill 1500 Por Larranga cigars every year. The cigars were a generous gift and in return Churchill sent this painting of his beloved Marrakesh back to Cuba. The painting will be sold later in June by Sothebys of London, estimate $2 million. #thanksmike #penpaintandchurchill #letsmakelemonade
