Halliaeetus leucogaster

“May you soar on eagle wings, high above the madness of the world…”

Jonathan Lockwood Huie

The White Bellied Sea Eagle is a pretty special bird. It is found along coastal regions from Sri Lanka down to Southern Australia. This bird despite appearances is not a hunter, rather it is opportunistic, feeding from carrion. In much of SE Asia it is found in significant numbers. That is not the case in Tasmania, where this photo was taken. Here this species is considered vulnerable to possible extinction. The White Bellied Sea Eagle is a revered guardian animal to several indigenous cultural groups in Australia. It was a privilege to see one in the wild. #nicephotomelissa #letsmakelemonade
