Sail away, sail away, sail away

“We cannot direct the wind, but we can adjust our sail…”

Dolly Parton

The first documentation of sailing occurs in the pottery of Mesopotamia from the 6th millennium BCE. Rest assured it was likely around even before that time. It probably started in a simple canoe, when someone became tired of paddling or just wanted to fulfill the basic human urge to go faster. Early craft would have employed a simple square sail. Such a rig cannot sail much closer than 80 degrees to the wind. Add a fore and aft rigs and you can sail 75 degrees off the wind. With multiple masts and sails, you can sail at speed even in a windward direction. The golden age of sailing was born. #beengoodweatherforit #letsmakelemonade
