“Don’t just interpret nature, be it’s rival…”
Brett Whiteley
This is an unusual work for Brett Whitely. It doesn’t have the blues of Sydney Harbour, the curves of his wife Wendy, or any references to injecting heroin. In 1969 Whitley was in New York, staying at the Chelsea Hotel and basically hanging out with Andy Warhol. He had just completed his largest ever multi-panel epic, American Dream. He felt the piece had been dismissed by American critics and Brett decided he had had enough of the USA. On the spur of the moment he took his famliy on a trip to Fiji. This is the most significant work to come out of his time in Fiji. It’s title is Green Mountain. The original painting resides in the Art Gallery of NSW, but Melissa bought me a print of it on our recent Wedding Anniversary. I love Whiteley’s paintings, Melissa less so. I think she liked the birds in this one #notasconfrontingassome #letsmakelemonade
