A couple of local wizards

“Everyone is born a genius, but the process of life disguises them…”

Buckminster Fuller

Late 2022 saw the publication of Brett Mason’s book the Wizards of Oz. Although this is not a book review, I can tell you it is a great read. It describes the intertwined lives and friendship of Mark Oliphant and Howard Florey, beginning in Adelaide and later in the UK. Both were remarkable. One split the atom, the other conquered infections. Lives were lost and saved, but both changed the world forever. Of course, I knew neither. However, at Unley High School, I sat my crucial Year 12 exams in the Oliphant Hall. I did just well enough that a few months later I attended my first Adelaide Medical School lecture in the Florey Theatre. #howimetyourmother #letsmakelemonade
