The prototype evil genius

“Nobody taller than 5′ 6″ will show real genius…”

Alexis Carrel

We have spoken about this guy before, but he is deeply complex, and as a short surgeon with a love of ancient Egypt I want to know more. Alexis Carrel is intensely problematic, and full of stark contrasts. He was French, but lived most of his life in America. He was only 5′ 3”, yet collaborated with one of the tallest men in the USA. He had one blue eye and one brown eye. In 1912 he was the youngest person to win a Nobel Prize. His work on vascular suturing is considered one of the greatest advances in surgery, behind only anaesthesia and antisepsis. He pioneered the first organ perfusion pump with Charles Lindberg the aviator as his research assistant. He was a sinister promoter of racist eugenics, yet strived to bring down the Nazis. Alexis Carrel also had a series of weird side quests. My favourite is the many years he laboured to reincarnate an Egyptian mummy from the Metropolitan Museum, using different jolts of electricity. #drfrankenstein #letsmakellemonade
