The first curator of the South Australian Museum was the pioneering naturalist, Frederick George Waterhouse. The Waterhouse art prize and exhibition, honour his significant contributions to the Museum. All manner of art media are eligible for this competition, but the subject must be an aspect of the natural world, sometimes very loosely. The prize was first awarded in 2002, but since 2014 it has been a biennial event. Melissa and I are big fans, and enjoy exploring together the complex entries in each exhibition. Sadly, that is where our mutual collaboration ends. As you can see from these images of both our favourite works in the current 2026 Waterhouse, Melissa likes intricate detail, I like abstract symbolism. Only once have we ever both had the same favourite piece at a Waterhouse exhibition, and that painting now hangs proudly on our dining room wall. #worththevisit #letsmakelemonade
