“The sea finds out everything you did wrong…”
Francis Stokes
The great thing about being involved in Urban Sketching is that you visit places you didn’t know about, or had completely overlooked. Armfield Slip and Boatshed in Goolwa is one such place. It was founded in 1926 by the Armfield family as a critical commercial slipway for local Murray River Vessels. At the time the mouth of the Murray was the end of a busy trade and supply route, it was vital to have somewhere to get your boat sorted out. By 1986, the world was a very different place, the business had closed and site was in jeopardy of being lost. The local council acted to preserve a piece of rich local history and purchased the property from the Armfield’s. This was an action that would become the catalyst for the first SA Wooden Boat Festival, now held annually at Goolwa. In 2012 the workshop on site was reopened by a volunteer driven body, with the aim of restoring, preserving and maintaining a fleet of historic traditional wooden boats. One of the most famous craft id the Hideaway, an iconic boat central to the filming of the 1976 film Storm Boy. #100yearoldlivingmuseum #letsmakelemonade
