How do you make an orange?

“I prefer to live in colour…”

David Hockney

How you mix the colour orange reveals a lot about your personal ideology. Are you RYB or RGB? Colour theory wheels abound in the world of pigment based art, particularly watercolours, and ironically are everywhere online for those seeking instruction and help. They all show the mixing of red and yellow to produce orange. This dogma of red, yellow and blue being the primary source of all possible hues, was the idea of 18th century Scottish physicist David Brewster. This is also known as subtractive colour theory. Come the 20th century with LCD TV and computer screens, and digital imagery is now king. Digital colour processing works better by mixing red, green and blue. This is referred to as opponent colour theory, and is mirrored by the colour receptors in our eyes. If you want to get really complex you can use the Munsell colour wheel we see here, which incorporates RGB, hue, value and chroma. #redandyelloeorgreenandred #letsmakelemonade
