48 years ago I went to the 1978 Sturt vs Norwood Grand Final at Football Park. I was with my Nanna Walsh, We had been going to Sturt games together since I turned five. She was a fanatic double blue fan and I had caught the bug. We saw a memorable game. Sturt had only lost one game all season and took a 29 point lead into the final quarter, only to end up losing by a point. A key moment was Norwood’s John Wynne running across the boundary line and collecting the veteran Sturt coach Jack Oatey late in the match. The other was umpire Des Foster awarding an outrageous mark, with allowed Phil Gallagher to kick the winning goal for Norwood. Foster later admitted publicly at an SANFL function that he had made a mistake at the time. For Sturt it was the end of an era, the Jack Oatey era. Seven premierships in a decade. Sturt spent the next few decades virtually winless and teetering on collapse. For Nanna and I it was also the last game of footy we went to together, we have had both become a bit old for it. Today I will attend the 2026 Sturt vs Norwood Grand Final. at Adelaide Oval. I will be surrounded by family and friends, but I will still be sitting with Nanna in my memories. #theonlytimeiheardherswear #letsmakelemonade
