Vincent Van Gogh
This is a very important and specific Van Gogh painting. In terms of style it has little in common with the other works produced towards the end of his life. Nothing about it screams Van Gogh. It does reflect his immense admiration of Japanese art, particularly floral painting. Vincent used the term Japanaiserie to describe this influence. This painting actually had a very specific role and purpose, which influenced both the subject and style. It was not an outpouring of vibrant thoughts and images, the kind that usually appear during this period. Theo, Vincent’s brother, wrote to him on January 31st 1890 to announce the birth of his son, whom he had named Vincent. Vincent was close to his brother. With this painting Van Gogh sought to control his demons and celebrate the birth of his nephew.
