Time to take five

“Timing isn’t the main thing. It’s the only thing…”

Miles Davis

Being a pen enthusiast means spending time browsing in second hand shops. Recently I discovered this vinyl LP. In 1994 Melissa and I saw the Dave Brubeck Quartet at the Barbican Centre in London. That night we heard live the jazz classics Blue Rondo a la Turk and Take Five. Both these pieces first emerged on this 1959 Time Out album. The 5/4 and 9/8 time signatures were influenced by a Brubeck trip to Turkey, specfically by the street muscians of Istanbul.I particularly like the cover art. It is an original abstract work of art by S Neil Fujita. Fujita was a resident artist for Columbia Records, and produced a series of iconic jazz album covers. This object makes me happy. It combines cool music, cool art and warm nostalgia. #getyourturntablesout. #letsmakelemonade
