“Lancashire Industrial Scene, 1928”
LS Lowry, Dunedin Public Art Gallery
With a population of just under 150,000, Dunedin is a significant New Zealand South Island city, but is far from a major metropolis. As ever Melissa and I instinctively judge a new city with a visit to their public art gallery. Dunedin did not disappoint. The permanent collection although tight, was well curated, interestingly presented, and unexpectedly broad ranging. Gainsborough, Whiteley, Nolan, Machiavelli and Monet were all on the walls. My biggest surprise was this Lowry. I am a big fan of his work, and this was my first chance to see one in the flesh. Lowry was essentially a self taught artist, based in North West England throughout his early 20th century career. His focus was everyday scenes of the working classes. A sparse palette of colours, stick like figures and industrial scenes were his hallmarks. #bucketlistpainting #letsmakelemonade
